Golden Globes - thoughts on Best Picture, Actress, Actor and more

The day I correctly predict the Golden Globes is the day I question my sanity. After last night's awards, all seems well...in that department at least. I predicted a few surprises going into the ceremony, but the thing about surprises...they are almost always impossible to predict.

One thing I would like everyone to pay attention to...I said it yesterday, and I'll say it again. The Globes no longer award actors because of their fame. I've seen some old school Oscar progs continue to say this, but it simply isn't true and hasn't been for a few years. Otherwise Lady Gaga would've been up on stage twice and Emily Blunt would've won over Olivia Colman. So, let's retire that predictor descriptive, ok?

My favorite surprise came when "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" won Animated Feature. What a deserving win. The biggest surprise (and somehow not surprising at all) came at the end of the night with Best Picture - Drama. The biggest question I have this morning is whether or not "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Rami Malek are real contenders for Best Picture and Best Actor.

Let's take a look at a few things....

Best Picture
Last night I would've said that no, not in a million years would the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award "Bohemian Rhapsody" the Best Picture of the year. But, today....I'm not so sure. In a year with no frontrunner, and every top contender with some sort of baggage/dissenter, it's possible. The biggest question mark for me continues to be "A Star is Born." It's hard for me to tell what the voting bodies think of it. The loudest on my Twitter feed have issues with it, which is entirely unsurprising and predictable. But those same people hate "Bohemian Rhapsody" even more. It almost gives me giggles this morning to think of them all seething over this win. What do you think of "A Star is Born," now, huh?!

"Black Panther" is still a contender, maybe "BlacKkKlansman." But right now, it's simply too hard to tell. If any film is maintaining, it is "Green Book." Although it looked like both Octavia Spencer and Mahershala Ali were a tad uncomfortable during the Peter Farrelly's speech...was that in my head?...it is continuing to win. And a screenplay win over "The Favourite?" That says something I think.

Next week, with the Critics Choice Awards, we should have a better understanding of many of these categories, especially Best Picture...and....

Best Actress
The best speech of the night went to Glenn Close. Wow. If that wasn't a force toward the Oscar podium, I don't know what is. Before the announcement was made I was hoping that Lady Gaga would win, even though Rosamund Pike gave my favorite performance by an actress this year, followed by Close. But once she was up there, I couldn't have been happier. Same with Olivia Colman. Although I didn't LOVE "The Favourite," and actually prefer Emma Stone for Actress in Leading Role, who doesn't love her as well?

Critics Choice, SAG...that will clear this category up a bit, but I'm leaning toward Glenn right now.

Best Actor
The Academy has a thing for young men in this category. Well...not last year. Sometimes they go for the up and comer, and sometimes they go with overdue. Christian Bale is not overdue. I'm feeling the momentum for Rami Malek, and although I wasn't as impressed with the performance as some, I can see why people love him in the film. Ethan Hawke needs to win next weekend at the Critics Choice to stay in the conversation, although I think the Academy might still come through for him. But, if so, who is left off the list? With "Green Book" going strong, Viggo seems a safe bet. I think it would be John David Washington.

Best Director
Sorry Spike, looks like Cuaron is going to take this one to the finish line yet again.

Overall, I found the show a bit dull, even though it really is impossible to not like Sandra Oh. The real fun came from the presenters, but for me, the lack of filler and gags made it all so bland. If the Academy goes without a host, I can't imagine how boring the show would be...but if they go with Hart...that's something I don't even want to touch on.

Today I vote for the Dorian Awards and the next few weeks, once I get the screeners, I will be focusing on the Independent Spirit Awards. Although I am still hoping to interview the director, writer and, yes, the star of "Beautiful Boy." I feel passionately that I must champion that film, particularly Timothee's performance, and hope I get the chance.

ALSO...this just came in, so I will post it here.
